Why Is Regina Spektor Famous? What Song Is Regina Spektor Known For?

On February 18, 1980, Regina Ilyinichna Spektor, a talented musician, was born in Russia. She later immigrated to the US. Her family left the Soviet Union when she was nine and a half years old, during the Perestroika era when citizens were allowed to do so.

She was heartbroken to have to give up her beloved piano. Her parents were initially afraid to leave the Soviet Union because of Spektor’s rigorous piano instruction.

Yet, they ultimately made the decision to leave due to the animosity toward Jews based on their race, nationality, and political beliefs.

To come to the United States, the Spektor family traveled to Austria and then Italy. They received assistance from the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) while there and were granted refugee status.

They couldn’t carry their piano from Moscow, so Regina was forced to practice on tabletops and other hard surfaces until she found a piano to play in the basement of her synagogue.

Sonia Vargas, a professor at the Manhattan School of Music, assisted her in her classical piano studies from the time she arrived in New York City until she was 17 years old. Vargas and Spektor’s father were introduced to one another by Vargas’ spouse, musician Samuel Marder.
