Being the captain of your team means more than leading the warm-up or telling everyone to quiet down. In many teams, the captains help the coach organize fundraisers, choreograph routines, settle team squabbles, and much, much more.

Positivity, discipline, hard work, and dedication are all things each athlete has to possess in order for a team to mesh well together, and this sport has taught me how to carry those things with me into the real world. To me, cheerleading is about having confidence in oneself.

A captain is responsible for the particular squad of members. The captain is to provide individual help in learning and perfecting cheers and routines, checking attendance, inspecting uniforms and equipment, and any additional duties involving the squad and makes sure routines are ready for performances.

Good Communication Skills – You should be able to not only speak clearly, but also be a very good listener. Responsibility and Maturity – You should be dependable, punctual, and emotionally mature. Be a Good Role Model – Your behavior is a reflection on not only yourself but the whole squad.

If you have cheered before, they’ll ask you about stunting and tumbling and may ask you to demonstrate. If you haven’t, have no fear. They’ll walk you through it. A standard tryout will include learning and performing a few cheers and possibly doing a short dance, basic jumps, stunting, or tumbling.

Major Point: Captains embody 3 C’s in leading their team: Caring, Courageous, and Consistent. Being named a team captain is quite the honor. The position of captain is given to those athletes whom the rest of the team respect and trust to lead the team in the right direction.
