Shrien Dewani was accused of planning the murder of his wife Anni. However, bringing him to trial took four years. Everything we know about this case is detailed here.
28 years of Anni Dewani, whose true name was Anni Ninna Dewani, was a Swedish lady of Indian origin who was murdered while on her honeymoon in South Africa when the cab in which she and her husband Shrien Dewani were riding was stolen.
Since 2010, the case of Anni Dewani’s murder has been under investigation. The 28-year-old bride was slain in South Africa while on her vacation with her husband, Shrien.
Mr. Dewani was accused of planning her assassination. However, bringing him to trial took four years.
Why Did Shrien Dewani Kill Anni?
Shrien Dewani was extradited from the United Kingdom to South Africa on April 7, 2014, after a lengthy court fight. He was arrested, accused, and sentenced to stand trial shortly after arriving for allegedly planning the murder of his wife Anni.
Mr. Dewani allegedly offered Zola Tongo, the couple’s taxi driver, 15,000 rands (£1,400) to kill his wife. Mr. Mngeni and Mr. Qwabe were put in touch with Tongo after he spoke to a friend about hiring a hitman.
The charges are described by Mr. Dewani’s family as “completely absurd.” Tongo has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in the murder.
Mr. Dewani is detained on suspicion of a murder plot on the 8th of December at the request of the South African police. When it obtains further data from prosecutors, the South African justice department said it will begin full extradition proceedings.
Mr. Dewani is scheduled to appear at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court later this month. He has stated that he will not agree to be extradited.
Mrs. Dewani, 28, was discovered in the rear seat of the cab she was riding in. She’d taken a bullet to the neck.
What Happened To Shrien Dewani?
The trial, according to the source, uncovered enticing facts such as Shrien Dewani’s sexuality, which may have offered a motivation for the murder, as well as evidence that Anni Dewani was intending to divorce her husband.
Furthermore, there is CCTV evidence of Shrien Dewani meeting with Zola Tonga prior to the incident, which would explain how the carjackers knew where to go and when to do the crime.
Nonetheless, Dewani’s defense requested that the trial be dismissed, and Judge Jeanette Traverso agreed that there were just too many discrepancies and that all evidence fell way below the bar of reasonable doubt to allow for a fair trial.
Anni Dewani’s family is undeterred in their pursuit of justice. Mr. Dewani was held under the Mental Health Act on April 20th at the medium-security Fromeside Clinic in Bristol.
A three-day extradition hearing begins in Belmarsh Magistrates’ Court a fortnight later. A witness told Hugo Keith QC, who represents the South African authorities, that Mr. Dewani stated he “needed a way out” of his marriage.
Mr. Dewani would not be abused in a South African prison, according to the court.
Is Shrien Dewani Still In Jail?
Shrien Dewani is accused of conspiring to kidnap, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, abduction, and impeding the administration of justice, among other charges.
All five counts were dismissed when he entered a not guilty plea. The trial of Dewani began on October 6, 2014.
The primary witnesses who implicated Dewani’s participation, Zola Tongo, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, and Monde Mbolombo, contradicted their prior testimonies and each other on most of the essential parts of the “murder for hire” scenario during cross-questioning.
Tongo and Mbolombo were discovered to have made up phone calls and texts that did not exist, and Tongo and Mbolombo refused to name a fifth conspirator mentioned in the recordings.
Qwabe failed to explain why Anni was driven into a residential neighborhood before the court.
