Lord Christopher Geidt Resigns: Was He Forced Out?

Lord Geidt, Boris Johnson’s ethics adviser, abruptly resigned after acknowledging the prime minister might have broken the ministerial code about the Partygate incident. This dealt a fresh blow to Boris Johnson’s effort.

Johnson’s attempts to ignore the public outcry over Partygate and the ensuing confidence vote from his MPs last week risk overshadowing the departure, the second from an ethical adviser in less than two years.

Alex Allan, Geidt’s predecessor, resigned in November 2020 after the prime minister disregarded his conclusion that Priti Patel had intimidated government employees.

Earlier this week, the ethics tsar was subjected to a challenging grilling by a cross-party committee of MPs. During that time, he agreed it was “reasonable” to imply Johnson may have violated the ministerial code, including a general duty to act in line with the law.

The robust evidence session reportedly validated Geidt’s perception that his position was no longer tenable. Speaking to him revealed that he was “sick of being lied to,” according to one individual, and “frustrated” by his portrayal as a “patsy,” according to another.

He wrote a stern letter to Johnson on Wednesday following what one of his friends described as a “long night of the soul.”

Paneling can be seen behind Christopher Geidt. Ethics advisor: it’s reasonable to speculate that the prime minister violated the law on Partygate.

Serious violations of the code are supposed to result in the minister resigning. The House of Commons Privileges Committee is already investigating whether Johnson violated the rule by deceiving parliament on whether lockdown-busting parties occurred.
