Who wrote rebecca

Is Rebecca based on a true story? The novel isn’t a true story, but many have claimed that the portrayals of womanhood in the story reflect many parts of the author’s upbringing and inner life.

Rebecca is not explicitly based on Jane Eyre, but Du Maurier may have been influenced by Brontë’s novel. There are certainly similarities between the two novels – both are written in Gothic Romance styles.

Rebecca is a 1938 Gothic novel written by English author, Daphne du Maurier. The novel depicts an unnamed young woman who impetuously marries a wealthy widower, before discovering that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, the title character.

In many ways, Rebecca captures the true essence and Gothic romantic style of Jane Eyre, something countless imitations of the classic had previously failed to achieve (Bertrandias). As examples of the Female Gothic romance, Jane Eyre and Rebecca offer similar heroines, heroes, and assorted plot devices.

It is no exaggeration to say that du Maurier was the 20th century’s Charlotte Bronte and “Rebecca” the 20th century’s “Jane Eyre.” The parallels between the two authors and the two books are obvious. … Jane Eyre is governess to a wealthy girl; the unnamed narrator of “Rebecca” is companion to a wealthy older woman.

Her role in the novel

Danvers was Rebecca’s maid as a child and following the death of her previous mistress, persecutes the new Mrs. de Winter. Danvers resents the new Mrs. de Winter, convinced she is trying to “take Rebecca’s place” despite the two women never meeting and being nothing alike.

Before she marries Maxim, she is the traveling companion to another character, an older woman, but she isn’t referred to as a different name. She is announced as “Caroline de Winter,” an ancestor of the de Winter family, at one point in the novel, when she descends the staircase for the ball celebrating her marriage.

As the opening line suggests, the entire tale is told retrospectively, from a time and place far away from the dramatic and distressing events the second Mrs. de Winter has lived through.
