Who Were Bill Russell Parents? Father Charles & Mother Katie

Russell was born in West Monroe, Louisiana, to Katie and Charles Russell. During World War II, when the Second Great Migration started, huge numbers of blacks migrated to the West in search of jobs.

Russell’s father relocated the family from Louisiana to Oakland, California, when he was eight years old.

They slipped into poverty while there, and Russell spent his childhood in a series of public housing complexes.

When WWII broke out, the older Russell went to work as a truck driver. Russell was closer to his mom, Katie, than to his father, and when she died suddenly when he was 12 years old, he suffered significant emotional trauma.
