During a night out, a 23-year-old marketing graduate fell off a cliff and died. Tragically, 23-year-old Megan Thornton died after plunging to her death from a cliff in Cornwall.
The marketing graduate had just been at the Cornish coastal home for a short period when she was informed that she could not spend the night there because 15 family members were already occupying the space. She entered the backyard, which was only 30 feet from the edge of the cliff that overlooked Widemouth Bay.
The night was completely dark because the solar lights that marked the cliff edge were not turned on. Due to erosion previously tearing it down, there was also no fencing.
Sadly, Megan walked a few steps and died in the accident. After the terrifying occurrence at 2 am, house visitor and GP practice nurse Alice Rogers tried to save her, but there was nothing that could be done.
An inquest found that she died from head and neck injuries consistent with a fall from a height. Coroner Andrew Cox concluded that the death was an accident and noted: “This was a tragic tragedy.”
She was very valuable to us, her father Paul Thornton said in a heartbroken victim impact statement he gave at the inquest. She has made us very proud. In her brief life, she accomplished so much. She was incredibly single-minded, tenacious, diligent, and ambitious.
