Thomson was a top goalkeeper in the Scottish game and had a top-level career that lasted more than two decades.
He was Scotland great Alan Rough’s backup when he made his first team breakthrough at Partick Thistle in the late 1970s.
In 1978, St Mirren paid £50,000 to sign him, a significant sum for a goalkeeper who was only 20 years old at the time. It turned out to be a wise investment because Thomson went on to become a Buddies club icon.
He played for St. Mirren for more than 200 league games and was without a doubt the team’s starting goalkeeper. In 1984, Thomson left Paisley and joined Jim McLean’s storied Dundee United team.
He competed against legendary Terrors actor Hamish McAlpine for the position of No. 1, eventually succeeding.
Thomson went on to play more than 230 times for United and was a member of the famed team that advanced to the 1987 UEFA Cup Final by defeating teams like Barcelona.
Thomson was recently honored by the Buddies and has been inducted into the Halls of Fame of Dundee United and St. Mirren.
