Arne Espeel, a goalkeeper from Belgium who played for Winkel Sport B, passed away unexpectedly.
Shortly after saving a penalty in a game against Westrozebeke, the 25-year-old slumped unexpectedly. Espeel was given every chance to live by emergency personnel, who even employed a defibrillator, but he died soon after getting to the hospital.
The match was played at the club’s home field in West Flanders Province, Belgium’s Sint-Eloois-Winkel. When the incident occurred, they were participating in a match in West Brabant’s second provincial league.
At the start of the second half, the away team was awarded a penalty, and Espeel made a fantastic save before collapsing to the ground. The cause of death has yet to be determined, and an autopsy is scheduled for today (13 February).
His team made the following statement: “Winkel Sport is in deep sadness following the untimely death of goalkeeper Arne Espeel. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Arne’s family and friends during this difficult time. Football has taken a back seat for the time being.”
Patrick Rotsaert, director of sports, added the following to Het Nieuwsblad: “It is tragic and shocking to us. Arne was adored by everyone at the club and had spent his entire life there. It’s a very damaging blow.”
In honor of the goalkeeper, club members, supporters, and the player’s family and friends will walk through Sint-Eloois-Winkel on Monday.
