Who was Amber Sugden? Tributes flow as NHS worker dies suddenly aged 24

Following her unexpected death at home, devastated friends and family have paid homage to the “one in a million” NHS employee.

Amber Sugden, a respected employee, and patient at Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital, passed away on February 27.

The 24-year-old has spent the last four years working as a medical secretary, and she even received recognition for her commitment to aiding others during the Covid pandemic.

The locals, who called her the “heart and soul of the celebration” and who “never had a smile off her face,” have been shocked by her passing.

Amber’s parents, Jo Thompson and Matty Sugden described her as a “girly girl” who enjoyed helping people in a painful eulogy.

Jo informed Teesside Live: “She was amazing, a beautiful girl inside and out. She worked hard and loved to party. We are in shock and can’t believe she’s gone.

“She was naturally beautiful and had everything on point. She was the full package she always had her nails and hair done and was so clever – a grade-A student. She really was marvellous.

“So many people have gotten in touch from her old employers to her school teachers. Everybody lucky enough to have met her has contacted us which is comforting.”

“She was the kindest girl, she’d go all out to help anybody. She was absolutely selfless and never wanted anything back she just wanted to help people.”

Amber completed a level 3 course and her A-levels with Macmillan before beginning an apprenticeship with Cleveland Police.

On social media, friends paid their respects, with one saying, “RIP pal.” Amber, I can’t believe I’m writing this about you. The boisterous, confident, effervescent one you could always hear before you saw!

“You never had a smile off your face and were always the light and soul of the party. I’ll never forget the laughs we had.”
