Shirley Annette Ballas, an English ballroom dancer, instructor, and judge, was born on September 6, 1960.
She is an expert in the International Latin division, where she has won several championship titles and been dubbed “The Queen of Latin” for doing so.
Following Len Goodman’s resignation from the BBC TV program Strictly Come Dancing in 2017, Ballas was named chief judge.
Who taught Shirley Ballas to dance?
It was “a difficult time” for Ballas when she relocated to North Yorkshire at the age of 15 to accompany British Ballroom Champion, Nigel Tiffany. Two years later, she and Tiffany relocated to London, where their relationship came to an end after Nina Hunt, a dance instructor, persuaded her to try out for the dancer Sammy Stopford.
