What is New Tricks about?
New Tricks, created by Nigel McCrery and Roy Mitchell, is a British television police procedural comedy-drama aired on BBC One.
The series initially began with a pilot episode on March 27, 2003, before a full season was commissioned for 1 April 2004, with it concluding after twelve seasons on October 6, 2015.
The New Tricks series focuses on the work of the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS) – a fictional division within London’s Metropolitan Police Service tasked with re-investigating unsolved crimes. UCOS primarily functioned with a senior police detective overseeing the work of three retired police officers who would handle each case, and who could bring in police support when needed.
Each episode focuses on a different investigation, with characters often coping with problems at their age but using their wisdom to overcome hurdles in the original investigation of cold cases.
New Tricks was produced by Wall to Wall Television for the BBC between 2003 and 2014, and by Headstrong Pictures thereafter.
Its cast included Dennis Waterman, Alun Armstrong, James Bolam, Amanda Redman, Denis Lawson, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Tamzin Outhwaite, and Larry Lamb.
Who replaced Amanda Redman in New Tricks?
English actress Tamzin Outhwaite replaced Amanda Redman on the BBC One series New Tricks.
Why was Amanda Redman replaced on New Tricks?
Amanda Redman said she quit New Tricks due to the show’s punishing schedule.
In a 2013 interview with The Sun, Amanda stated that a ten-episode shoot was “too long”. “You can’t fit in other work as there just isn’t enough time,” she said.
“It’s good to challenge yourself because otherwise you stagnate and I want to do so much more.”
Adding that, her exit from the series had been “a very tearful goodbye”.
“I do feel how Sandra leaves is spot on,” she added. “She is faced with some very difficult decisions.
“What the writers did was take my own reasons for leaving New Tricks and use the same arguments with Sandra, which I thought was clever.”
