Who possessed Linda Blair in The Exorcist?
Blatty derived the character from Assyrian and Babylonian mythology, where the mythic Pazuzu was considered the king of the demons of the wind, and the son of the god Hanbi. In The Exorcist, Pazuzu appears as a demon who possesses Regan MacNeil.
Pazuzu wants to be in control of the situation. However, when Father Damien Karras starts assuming the role of an interrogator, Pazuzu tries to feign disinterest or a weak desire to unclasp the rope that keeps Regan from moving freely in bed, trying to play along with Father Karras to see what his line of questioning would lead to. It is like Pazuzu is trying to test the waters since that is the first time he and the priest meet each other.
In fact, Pazuzu doesn’t think it would work to his advantage to break the ropes at that particular moment, so he tries to ask Father Karras to untie the ropes because if the priest would do so, then Pazuzu would know how to manipulate the priest from doing his will, without Pazuzu using his powers.
Later on, Pazuzu finally decides to use his power to break the ropes on Regan so he could inflict harm on Father Karras and Father Lankester Merr
