William Ryan, stationed at Aughrim, will be tried in June.

On September 29th, 2020, Garda Ryan was accused of falsely imprisoning and sexually assaulting the woman at Aughrim Garda Station.

On August 23rd, 2019, and February 25th, last year, he was also accused of sexually inappropriate conduct at another site in Leinster.

Lawyers for several news organizations contested the ruling, claiming there was no rationale for it.

Judge Melanie Greally ruled in favor of the media, saying there was no evidence that the publication of Mr. Ryan’s name would jeopardize his right to a fair trial.

He claimed that the defendant’s right to privacy did not justify reducing the right to a public trial under the Constitution.

He stated that prior decisions had made it plain that there were only two justifications for imposing reporting restrictions.

The first is where there are legislative restrictions on publication, and the second is where there is a natural, identifiable risk of an unfair trial as a result of publication, according to him.

The court has heard that disclosing the defendant’s name will not result in the complainant’s identification, which would be grounds for an anonymity order.

A trial date of June 4th, 2024, has also been established.
