Andy Warhol’s Ladies and Gentlemen, portraits of drag queens, is still considered the greatest project of the twentieth century. The most notable portrait was of Wilhelmina Ross.
Andy Warhol was an influential person in the pop art movement as an artist, producer, and film director in the United States.
Andy, a pop artist obsessed with fame and consumer culture, created some of the most famous images of the twentieth century.
Who Is Wilhelmina Ross?
Wilhelmina Ross was a transgender woman recruited for Andy Warhol’s Ladies and Gentlemen Project in 1974.
Luciano Anselmino, an Italian gallerist, commissioned the “Ladies and Gentlemen” series.
Luciano paid $900,000 to Andy Warhol for 105 paintings. Andy paid each of the 19 sitters $50 and photographed over 500 polaroids which led to the creation of 268 canvases.

Wilhelmina was the one who stood out the most in those photographs. She was featured in 73 paintings and 52 polaroids.
The paintings were shown in Italy the following year.
Wilhelmina was from Lexington, a remote town in Kentucky. Her real birth name was Mitchell Huntell, and she had five other siblings.
She was part Cherokee and part African American.
In 1968, she became involved in the Jackie Curtis play “Amerika Cleopatra.” In another play, she played a drag queen superstar, Belladella Bosom.
Sadly, Wilhelmina Ross died in 1991 in Lexington.
Andy Warhol Persona
Andy Warhol had a different persona when he was in front of the public and a different persona when he was alone.
Because of Andy’s materialistic tendencies, his wardrobe and physical appearance were among the most meticulously planned components of his public persona.
Warhol’s clothing style was meant to evoke a sense of mystery, but underneath, his dressing included a painful layer of insecurity.
He was self-conscious of his appearance throughout his life, and even when he shone in public, he took steps to disguise his concerns.
His nose, in particular, was a source of pain for him. He despised its form, and at the age of 29, he had a nose job.
