Who Is Vasile Culea? Did He Kill 86 Year Old Freda Walker?
Freda Walker was killed in an incident at her home in Shirebrook, near Bolsover in Derbyshire, and Vasile Culea was arrested.
According to prosecutors, her 88-year-old husband, Ken Walker, a former district councillor, was also critically injured during the January 14 incident.
The next day, January 15, a concerned neighbour discovered the couple at the property and called 911.
Culea, a 33-year-old Romanian suspect, appeared in front of a judge for the first time today at Derby Crown Court ahead of a murder trial.
Culea, dressed in a blue sweatshirt, listened in on the proceedings through a Romanian interpreter. According to the charges, Culea murdered Mrs Walker on January 14 and attempted to murder Mr Walker on the same day.
Mr Walker was previously described as being in critical but stable condition in the hospital.
Derbyshire Police announced today that he was no longer in critical condition but would remain in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Vasile Culea Murder Case Update
Freda Walker, 86, was killed in an attack on Station Road on January 15.
Culea denied murder and attempted murder this morning, and a two-week trial is set to begin on October 4.
According to an inquest held last month, Freda died after suffering head injuries and airway obstruction, while Ken suffered life-threatening injuries but remained in hospital in a stable condition.
During a brief hearing, Culea was only required to confirm his name and was not required to enter any pleas.
Judge Nirmal Shant QC remanded the defendant in custody and told Culea, ‘As far as this case is concerned, it will be tried on October 4.’

According to his Facebook profile, Vasile Culea lives in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and goes by the name Vasy.
He was last seen in his hometown of Oltenita, which sits on the banks of the Danube, in 2015.
Locals believe he worked at the massive Sports Direct plant in Shirebrook, which is jokingly dubbed The Gulag – a reference to the Soviet Union’s forced labour camps – due to its history of poor working conditions and a high proportion of Eastern European workers.
