Phil’s journey with boba culture started during his college years when he recognized the unique role that boba shops played in Asian American culture. This realization ignited a passion in him, leading him to work at a local cafe and immerse himself in the artistry of creating the perfect boba beverages. Meanwhile, Phil’s co-founder, Eric Wang, was on a different culinary trajectory, developing a love for cooking from a young age. However, parental expectations led him to put his culinary dreams on hold in pursuit of a more conventional career.
In 2016, the stars aligned as longtime friends Phil and Eric decided to embark on a shared dream – opening their own cafe that would blend their culinary expertise and passion for hospitality. The journey, however, was far from easy. Over the course of two challenging years, they meticulously developed their product and concept, facing the additional hurdle of finding the perfect location to bring their dream to life.
Their perseverance paid off when they discovered the ideal spot in the heart of San Gabriel. With a home secured for BOPOMOFO, Phil and Eric were ready to unveil their innovative ideas to the world. Their vision was clear – to create a space that offered drinks crafted from fresh, real ingredients and food items that celebrated their bi-cultural upbringing.
The duo was fully aware that introducing these novel concepts to the local community would be both daring and unfamiliar. Yet, their intentions to foster a vibrant, delicious, and impactful space were met with open arms. The community welcomed BOPOMOFO, embracing the unique menu and the cultural fusion that Phil and Eric brought to their plates and cups.
