Phyla Vell is the little girl in Guardians of The Galaxy 3. Phyla Vell is portrayed by child actress Kai Zen.
The 2023 superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks the final installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and the 32nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy, the film was written and directed by filmmaker James Gunn.
It features an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji, Nathan Fillion, Sylvester Stallone, and Bradley Cooper.
In the film, the superhero team embarks on a mission to protect Rocket Raccoon (Cooper) from the High Evolutionary (Iwuji).
With multiple characters returning in the final installment, there are also characters making their debut, such as the little girl Phyla, who appears relatively briefly in the film.
The film premiered on April 22, 2023, at Disneyland Paris and was released on May 5, 2023, in the United States as part of Phase Five of the MCU. It received generally positive reviews.
Who Was The Girl In Guardians Of The Galaxy 3?
The little girl in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is Phyla Vell. Created by High Evolutionary, she ultimately becomes one of the new members of the superhero team.
Director Gunn recently revealed that he was the one who opted to introduce Phyla-Vell to the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and not Marvel Studios.
He claimed sole responsibility for Phyla’s debut via Twitter while responding to a fan who asked him about the mind behind the idea featuring a surprise appearance by the cosmic superhero.
The little girl appears briefly in the film, and the actress portraying the character is credited simply as Phyla.
This is likely due to Phyla-Vell’s MCU original story being different from that of her comic book counterpart, illustrated as the artificially engineered daughter of Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell.
Still, the big screen and comic book versions of the character have plenty in common, considering her impressive power set.
Phyla-Vell is shown flying during the mid-credit scenes of the film, which strongly implies that she can likely fire energy blasts from her hands.
During the final act, the Guardians successfully rescue white-haired Phyla and the remaining captured star children from High Evolutionary.
The old Guardians team disbanded for the time being and there’s a new group of superheroes taking up the mantle, led by Rocket, Groot, Kraglin, Adam, Cosmo, Blurp, and Phyla.
While the new team is waiting for their enemies, they each go around and share their dearest musical artist while the citizens of the planet are freaking out behind them.
As they suddenly appear, the new team comes together to prepare for a battle as brand-new Guardians of the Galaxy.
The end-credits scenes show Peter Quill back home with his grandfather eating cereal. His grandpa is reading a newspaper that reads Kevin Bacon is taken by aliens.
This suggests a nice nod to The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
What Are Phyla Vell Powers In The MCU?
Phyla Vell powers include superhuman strength, reflexes, durability, and speed. She can fly, fire energy blasts, and act like an energy sponge, absorbing energy attacks directed at her and returning them.
She is the genetically engineered daughter of Elysius, patterned after the Eternals of Titan. She is one of the prominent members of the GOTC from the comics.
Created by Peter David and Paul Azaceta, the character first appeared in Captain Marvel Vol. 5 #16 in January 2004.
When her brother, Genis-Vell, also created by Elysius, destroyed and recreated the world, he made a new universe keeping everything mostly the same with some subtle differences.
Phyla was the second child, Elysius created from Mar-Vell’s DNA, and for a time, she wore the name Captain Marvel.
Phyla possesses cosmic awareness and is a skillful fighter. She can tap into knowledge throughout time and space using comic awareness.
The use alters her skin to the space blackness. She is a hand-to-hand combatant and twirls a quantum sword she made with the Quantum Bands, though it now exists separately from their power.
Quantum Bands supplement her power as Quasar, which she uses to manipulate Quantum Zone’s extradimensional energies to create solid-energy constructs, including force fields and weapons.
The energy also protects her from telepathic attacks and augments her pre-existing powers.
After the Band’s power is infected, Phyla becomes limited in the power level she could likely exert in the given time frame.
Presumably, she could also have used them to process information, teleport via rapid entrance and exit of the Quantum Zone, control Electromagnetic energy, and shunt matter into the Zone.
Determined to protect the universe, she fights with cosmic entities, including the universe-conquering Annihilus.
