Joya grew up in a racist environment and had to deal with racism and integration on a daily basis. She married at the age of 19 and became a Muslim fundamentalist under the influence of her husband.
She wanted to leave the marriage, but it was extremely difficult for her to do so. Her husband abducted her ten years into their marriage and took her to Turkey. She did not like it and had informed US authorities because she was concerned for the safety of her children.
Joya successfully re-crossed the border into Turkey and returned to the United States. She is currently residing in Dallas, her ex-husband’s hometown.

In 2004, the so-called ISIS bride married American Muslim convert John, also known as Yahya al-Bahrumi. They had four sons and two daughters together.
Joya and their three children had been taken to Syria against her will by Georgelas in 2013. The American Muslim convert was said to be the highest-ranking American in the Islamic State.
