Sidney is the son of Ida Coleman, and was raised in Gaffney with his two older brothers. He went to Gaffney High School where he played both football and basketball for the high school team, Gaffney Indians. During his high school career, Sidney received numerous honors including being named as All-State in both sports, and Offensive Player of the Year in football, among other accolades. He also won two state titles with the basketball team and a championship with the football team. After matriculation Sidney enrolled at the University of South Carolina, continuing his football career; in his first season he posted 1,143 yards with 70 catches, which led to 13 touchdowns. He played for the university until 2006 and recorded 23 touchdowns, which is the record of the team, breaking Sterling Sharpe’s record of 17 touchdowns.

Sidney`s professional career began in 2007 when he was selected as the 44th overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL Draft.
