A billionaire Russian-American computer technologist Sergey Brin is a mathematician and internet tycoon. He is also the head of Alphabet Inc, the parent company of multinational technology company Google.
Brin partnered with his college friend Larry Page, with whom he pioneered Google. The duo took the internet outfit from a humble dorm room to world domination. As of 2018, the tech billionaire was the 13th richest person in the world.
Who is Sergey Brin?
Sergey Mikhaylovich Brin was born on August 21, 1973 in Moscow in what was then the Soviet Union. He is of Russian Jewish descent through his mother Yevgenia and father Mikhail Brin.
His father currently teaches mathematics at the University of Maryland while his mother is a researcher at the United States National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA).
Sergey Brin grew up in Moscow with his parentsand grandmother. His father reportedly expelled his family from Russia after returning from a conference in Warsaw, Poland. His parents’ visa application led to their job loss in 1978. They took odd jobs to support the family before receiving their visa the following year (1979).
His education
At the age of 6, Sergey Brin began his early education at the Paint Branch Montessori School in Adelphi, Maryland and then took classes home. His parents groomed him to maintain the Russian language and sent him to Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Maryland, where he graduated in 1990 and enrolled at the University of Maryland.
At the age of 19, Brin graduated from Stanford University with a degree in computer science, where he met his friend and business partner, Larry Page.
Page and Brin did not initially see each other as friends as they disagreed on various issues, but gradually warmed to each other and became close friends over the years.
The duo teamed up to create the PageRank algorithm , an algorithm named after Larry, the site used to determine the importance of web pages. This is the same algorithm that Google uses today to rank pages on the World Wide Web. Larry Page’s dormitory was quickly converted into a server lab, where various computer components were assembled to build a device that plugged into Stanford University’s campus network.
They set up the dormitory as their office and in the data center, using their basic HTML and programming skills, they created a simple user interface for the search page and tested the search engine. It almost brought down the university’s network infrastructure as more hardware was assembled to improve the search engine. It soon became popular with students at Stanford and was incorporated into Stanford University’s website in August 1996.
Google was officially launched as a search engine on September 4, 1998, after which they received more than 10,000 searches per day. Today, Google is not just a household name among web search engines, but has grown into a multi-billion dollar multinational company that has spawned other services besides search engines.
Brin and his partner Page were named one of MIT Technology’s 100 Most Innovative Companies Under 35. In 2003 they received an honorary MBA from IE Business School in Madrid, Spain.
The duo was named the fifth most by ForbesIn November 2009, and in February of the same year, Sergey Brin was sworn into the National Academy of Engineering. He appeared as himself in the 2013 film The Internship.
His capital
Sergey Brin is a multi-billionaire, he was named in October 2018 as the 13th richest person in the world by Forbes with a net worth of $47.5 billion as of December 2018, that number increased now that he has ranked alongside his partner Larry Page 10 of the updated list with a close follower was followed by a net worth of around $49.7 billion. He is also voted sixth richest in technology after Larry Page #5.
wife or girlfriend and affairs
The 5ft 8inch internet mogul was previously married to Anne Wojcicki – a biotech analyst at the 23andme organization.
Brin married Anne Wojcicki in May 2007 in a private ceremony. Wojcicki is a biotech analyst and businesswoman. She is co-founder of 23andme biotech companies. The marriage between the two produced two children – a son Benji Wojin and a daughter Chloe Wojin – in 2008 and 2011. The couple announced their separation in August 2013 and officially divorced in June 2015.
The divorce was attributed to Brin’s extramarital affair with Google employee Amanda Rosenberg. Amanda was a member of the Google Glass project team and a graduate of Leeds University, UK before joining Google in 2008. Before she and Brin met, she was previously in a romantic relationship with another senior Google executive, Hugo Barra.
Although divorced, Brin and Wojcicki are still business partners and are involved in various humanitarian projects.
