Rusty made his race car driving debut in 1973 at Lake hill Speedway near Valley Park, Missouri. That was only the beginning of his domination on the tracks, as he made a name for himself winning a number of track championships around the Mid-West. Thanks to that, he became a member of the United States Auto Club’s (USAC’s) stock car division in 1979, and in the same year won Rookie of the Year honors, finishing third. Two years later, at the same championship he finished second, increasing his net worth by a large margin.

Prior to that time, Rusty began competing for in NASCAR, finishing in second position in his debut NASCAR race, driving No. 16 for Roger Penske in the 1980 Atlanta 500. He continued to race successfully, and in 1983 he won the American Speed Association (ASA) championship. Soon he won the NASCAR Rookie of the Year honors, after which he began to drive the No. 2 Valugard Pontiac for Cliff Stewart. However, he switched to drive the No. 27 Valugard Pontiac for Raymond Beadle’s Blue Max Racing team, and soon he won the 1986 Bristol Motor Speedway. During 1987 he won Watkins Glen and Riverside championships, and in the following year he scored six wins, finishing second in the championship to Bill Elliott by 24 points.

Furthermore, in 1989 Rusty won the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Championship, and in 1991 he was an IROC champion. However, his best season was 1993, when he won the 1993 Food City 500 at Bristol Speedway, at the same time as his friend Alan Kulwicki died in a plane accident, so he dedicated the victory to him by doing Kulwicki’s trademark reverse “Polish Victory Lap”. The season he ended in the top three, contributing further to his net worth.

After the 1993 season, Rusty continued to line up success after success until 2002, and his last victory came two years later, when he won the Advance Auto Parts 500 at Martinsville Speedway. His last competition was in the 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup, after which he retired.

However, he stayed in the sports industry as an analyst for NASCAR and ESPN, which have increased his net worth further. Beside that, he founded his racing team named Rusty Wallace Racing.
