Richard Goodall, a native of Terre Haute, Indiana, casually took the stage, using a boombox to provide musical accompaniment, and demonstrated his incredible vocal range to the children. After he sang the first lyric, an audience member responded with an audible “Oh god,”

The heartfelt rendition of the popular Journey song “Don’t Stop Believin'” by an Indiana elementary school janitor has gone viral. Steve Perry, the band’s original lead singer and a co-writer of the song, recently took notice.

Davis Park Elementary School employs 53-year-old Terre Haute, Indiana, resident Richard Goodall for custodial duties.

He has worked for Vigo County School Corporation for more than 20 years.

A talent event was arranged to celebrate the fifth-grade graduates at the end of the academic year.

The teachers requested Goodall to sing at the end of the presentation, and little did she know that her performance would end up bringing joy to millions of people online.

Goodall covered the Lee Greenwood classic “God Bless the USA” for his debut TikTok earlier this month. But things took off once he released the video of himself performing the Journey classic during the school assembly.

The video has received more than 16.2 thousand “loves” since it was shared on Twitter by a user going by the handle Arlong. Added Arlong in their article, “I have nothing but admiration for school janitors, especially ones who work so hard. People are unaware of how cool students genuinely get when they hang out with the janitors. They were without a doubt the coolest adults in the building.”

Don’t Stop Believin’ wasn’t the end of Goodall’s work. Along with other songs, he also uploaded a very excellent cover of Journey’s “Still They Ride” and “Stone in Love” to his TikTok account. Even Steve Perry, the original vocalist for Journey, responded to his performance and gave “Goodall beamingly responded, “Love your music, sir! I love this.” Thank you for your feedback. This is really important to me! I’m grateful.”

Goodall participated in The Voice’s open virtual call, according to a video on his TikTok account, but was not chosen to continue in the competition.

Later, he added, “Unhappy, for sure! For a brief while, I believed everything everyone told me about how wonderful I am, but I’ll keep going. I regret believing that 2 million views would have an impact. I suppose I’ll still need to pick up the trash at 6 a.m. But I work in that manner. And I’ll keep doing it. I appreciate your positive support, everyone. Being told you’re not good enough is difficult.”

True to his word, Goodall has continued to post covers, most recently with songs by Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel, and Chicago.
