At a young age, Quinn was discovered by cinematographer James Wong Howe, and soon she would start appearing in various television commercials. In 1977, she was cast in the role of Lucy McFadden in the film “The Goodbye Girl”, which led to a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards, and a nomination for a Golden Globe. Soon more opportunities would open up for her, and her net worth would start to increase, and the following year she landed a recurring role in the series “Family”. In 1985, she appeared in the short lived “Hail to the Chief”, playing the daughter of the President of the United States. She acted occasionally during the late 1980s, and even worked as a casting agent. However, she became uncomfortable with her acting career, and would soon retire from acting. Her last acting role was an episode of 1991’s “Blossom”.

In 2009, she wrote her first book entitled “The Underwire: Adventures from my Awkward and Lovely Life”. Three years later she published her second book, entitled “The Year of Learning Dangerously” which explores home schooling in the US. One of her most recent works is “Pet Sounds”, which is a collection of stories relating to animals and pet ownership. Cummings has been featured in various publications, including People and Time magazines, The Wall Street Journal, Salon, and The Atlantic, all adding to her net worth.
