Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein Divorce
Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein divorced her husband, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The court ordered Dubai’s ruler to pay a sum of about $728 million to her and their two children.
Judge Philip Moor said most of the money is to protect them from the grave risk that the Sheikh pose. He also mentioned that she didn’t ask for an award for herself but security. He additionally told Mohammed to compensate for the loss of possessions Haya faced due to marital breakdown.
Princess Haya, the half-sister of Jordan’s King Abdullah, fled to England from the UAE in April 2019 with her two children. The reason was the fear of her husband.
Mohammed carried out a campaign of threats and intimidation, making her feel unsafe. Further, he previously abducted and mistreated two of his daughters from another marriage. The London court found him guilty of this accusation later that year.
He will pay over $332 million within three months to Haya for her mansions in the UK and future security costs. It will also cover the money which she owed for jewelry and racehorses.
Sheikh will also provide over $3.95 million to facilitate the education of their children, Jalila and Zayed. Further, an amount over $12 million is in arrears. As per the settlement, he would have to pay more than $14.8 million for the children’s maintenance and security when they become adults.
HSBC bank will hold the security worth $384 million, guarantying the payments. Haya originally wanted $1.8 billion, but the final sum is less than half of that.
However, Moor said he would not give carte blanche to his ex-wife’s financial claims. Instead, consider her demands. He also added that the money wasn’t an object during the marriage.
Haya testified for almost seven hours, concluding that she wanted herself and her children to be free from the Sheikhs, and a one-off payment would help realize it.
