Fontana’s condition required her to repeat phrases’malignant cancer free’ and ‘plane crash free’ hundreds of times per day to ‘guard’ herself and her family from harm.

Her dread of planes began when she was 18 after suffering a terrible panic attack while flying, and she told the Herald Sun. Her concern about cancer arose from her sister’s need for cancer treatment as a teenager.

‘I have to keep repeating that in my thoughts.’ It’s reassuring because I’m afraid something horrible will happen to someone if I don’t do it,’ she stated.

Another of her tendencies was to repeat words in her thoughts until they reached a predetermined length.

Fontana voluntarily went to the hospital after realizing the severity of her health and how it had progressed under lockdown.
