Pat John led a vanguard of Indigenous television actors in unconventional roles in his role as the steadfast business partner to wood salvager Nick Adonidas, played by Bruno Gerussi.

The former St. Augustine’s Indian Residential School in Sechelt, which closed in 1975, was where John went. He left school early to work at a nearby sawmill.

One of John’s former instructors got in touch with him in 1971 and encouraged him to go to an audition for the role of a 16-year-old Indigenous boy in a brand-new TV show.

He conducted a meandering monologue, a camera test, and then went back to work at the sawmill. He was recruited for 10 weeks at a salary of $600 per week a half year later.
