Lisa Olivia Munn was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 3, 1980 to Winston Munn and Kimberly Schmid. She is of mixed ethnicity, with her mother being of Chinese and Vietnamese descent, while her father is of Irish, German and English descent. Her mother was a Vietnamese refugee who fled her country during the Vietnam War and later married her father after graduation. Her parents divorced sadly when Olivia was only two years old.
Her mother later remarried to a member of the United States Air Force which caused the family to relocate several times, although Olivia was raised primarily in Tokyo, Japan. In Tokyo, she appeared in local theater productions and started modeling.
However, her stepfather was verbally abusive and eventually her mother and stepfather divorced as teenagers, resulting in Olivia and her family moving back to the United States. She has a sister, Sara, a lawyer and a brother, John, a physicist.
