Career as an NFL safety
While at the University of Connecticut, ObiMelifonwu was playing with the Huskies (the university’s team). In his first year with the team, he started in all of the team’s games, spanning 12, in which he attacked 70 times while intercepting twice. As his academics progressed, he also saw advances in his games, including tackles and interceptions.
In his senior year in 2016, he played in 13 games, starting in all of them and had a record 118 tackles with four interceptions. Obi Melifonwu’s tally during his time with the Huskies totals 351 tackles and eight interceptions, an impressive tally for a player his age.
While playing college football, ObiMelifonwu had attended and trained with over ten NFL teams. He was also ranked as one of the top 5 nominees for best safety, with predictions that he would be selected by one of the teams in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft.
When the draft came out, however, he didn’t make the cut as early as the second round and when the Oakland Raiders picked him, they had to wait longer. His time with the Raiders was short as he was injured on a number of occasions. One of these required hip surgery, which he played for some time. Due to his injuries, he was placed on the Raiders injury reserve and was released from the team in 2018.
A month after his release from the Raiders, ObiMelifonwu was picked up by the New England Patriots. In the time that he has joined the team he has only played in two games, hopefully over time he will play more games and fulfill all the predictions of a great career he thought he would lead .
