Nikolas Cruz attack jail officer
Shocking new surveillance video shows the moment Parkland school shooting defendant Nikolas Cruz attacks an officer at the Broward County jail in 2018, about nine months after the deadly shooting that left 17 people dead.
The November 13, 2018 video has no audio, but the accused murderer is seen giving the officer his finger before lashing out at him and knocking him to the ground while beating him. Beltran eventually hits Cruz, who walks to the other side of the room and lies face down on the floor after the guard pulls out a stun gun, footage shows.
The video was played by prosecutors in court Wednesday in Cruz’s first appearance in person since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. In stark contrast to the video attack, Cruz, chained and in an orange jumpsuit, sat quietly during the 30-minute court appearance.
Defense attorney David Wheeler told Circuit Judge Elizabeth Sherer that Beltrán had previously abused Cruz and that he was reacting to the abuse.
Prosecutor Maria Schneider asked the judge for Cruz’s complete medical records to determine if they support the allegations of abuse by Beltrán. Wheeler responded that the records are largely confidential.
Sherer is expected to comment on the request on Friday. Cruz, 22, faces a possible death sentence if he is convicted of the bloody shooting, one of the deadliest in US history.
