Mekapati is a part of the YSR Congress and represents the Nellore Loksabha Constituency in Andhra Pradesh. In the 16th Lok Sabha, he is the YSR Congress Floor Leader.
In 1983, Reddy ran for the Indian National Congress and lost the election. He was appointed to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly as a nominee of the same party in 1985, and he was appointed to the Lok Sabha as an INC representative in 1989.
