Higdon, a metro Atlanta preschool assistant, was in a live-in relationship with Steven Andrew Freeman. The couple were high school sweethearts, had been in a relationship for seven years, and lived together at their home in Spalding County.

On August 1, 2018, Mary fatally shot her longtime boyfriend, Steven Freeman. According to Griffin police, Higdon, 24, pulled the trigger of the gun that took the life of 23-year-old Freeman, who was shot once in the chest in their home.

Higdon claimed that the incident was an accident, and she did not know that the gun had a bullet in the chamber. At that time, she worked as a part-time teacher’s assistant at St. George’s Episcopal School in Milner.

According to Higdon, it accidentally went off when she handed the gun to Freeman. But investigators noticed food scattered across the kitchen floor and believed there may have been an altercation before the shooting.

Later in court, Higdon testified that she had held the gun up that night because she was scared of Freeman. She painted a picture that she was constantly abused by Freeman, reading multiple threatening text messages that Freeman sent to her a year before his death.

She also claimed that Freeman used to hit her and raped her on two occasions. However, she never complained about her boyfriend’s alleged abuse before the case.

Is Mary Katherine Higdon Guilty Or Innocent?

At the end of the court case, the jury found Mary Katherine Higdon not guilty. However, many were left stunned by the verdict and the decision to acquit her of all charges; malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

However, Steven’s family still believes that he was killed intentionally by Mary. They are still fighting for justice for the deceased.

It is not clear whether Mary is, in fact, innocent or guilty of the murder of her boyfriend. However, as of 2022, she is a free woman living her daily life out of the spotlight.
