Mark grew up in a dysfunctional family, and by the age of 18 he was heavily using drugs. He was arrested and sentenced to a year in prison on drug-related crimes, and he took a yearlong rehabilitation course which helped him get a release from jail.

Eventually he befriended Van Conner, and the two would form the band Screaming Trees, which became one of the emerging grunge bands of the time, releasing their first EP in 1985 entitled “Other Worlds EP”. He became the singer of the band, and they eventually made their debut album entitled “Clairvoyance” within the same year. Two years later, they created their second album entitled “Even if and Especially When”, and they also started playing across the US. They followed up with another album the following year entitled “Invisible Lantern”, and their next project would come in 1991, their first working for a major label. The album was entitled “Uncle Anesthesia”, and their song “Bed of Roses” became popular on the radio.

Their net worth increased significantly when they released their breakout album entitled “Sweet Oblivion” which included songs such as “Nearly Lost You” and “Dollar Bill”. Their final album would be released in 1996 entitled “Dust”, and they then announced their breakup, actually in 2000.

Mark was already releasing solo work while a part of Screaming Trees, including four solo studio albums during this time. He then worked on his fifth album in 2001 entitled “Field Songs”, which featured contributions from other artists. Three years later, he produced “Bubblegum”, which featured Nick Oliveri, Dean Ween, and Duff McKagan, which eventually became his most commercially successful. He also released a Christmas album entitled “Dark Mark Does Christmas 2012”, and in 2014 the EP entitled “No Bells on Sunday” which contained five tracks. While embarking on his solo career, he worked continuously with the Queens of the Stone Age as well as Isobel Campbell, as well as with vocalist Greg Dulli in the collaboration project The Gutter Twins. A few of his latest works include collaborating with Unkle, I AM Super Ape, and Earth.

For his personal life, it is known that Lanegan married Wendy Fowler in 2002 but they eventually divorced.

Quote
1 There’s this Danish director, Nicolas Refn [Nicolas Winding Refn], who made the Pusher trilogy, which I’m really into. In the second Pusher film there’s a piece of music called Sad Disco, by Keli Hlodversson, which I particularly enjoyed.
2 [on “Blues Funeral”] They were all written right before or during the period when we recorded. Usually I have a stockpile. I still work with cassette tapes, and when I was about to start this record I went into my bag of tapes and they were all demagnetized. Wiped clean. So I didn’t really have anything to start with.
3 [on “Blues Funeral”] Generally I write on the guitar, but this one I started a few with the keyboard and a drum machine, to do something different.
