Hughes joined Manchester United in 1980, when he was noticed by talent scout Hugh Roberts, but didn’t make his first team debut for another three years. During his first season, Mark scored 25 goals in 55 matches, and helped the team finish fourth in the league. In the following season, he scored 17 goals in the First Division which remained the highest goals tally per season in his career. Surprisingly, Hughes was sold to Barcelona in 1986, and was soon loaned out to Bayern Munich for the following season, where he stayed until his return to Manchester United in 1988. In his first season back in England, the club had a disappointing result, finishing 11th in the league, however, Mark was voted PFA Player of the Year, becoming the first Manchester United player so credited with this award. In the following season, he once again proved to be the team’s top scorer with 21 goals in all competitions, helping the team reach Football League Cup final, and was again voted PFA Player of the Year.

When United won its first Premier League title in 1993, Hughes finally earned an English league medal. The following year, Manchester United won the league title and the FA Cup, in which Mark scored in the final. His last match with Manchester United was in June 1995 at the FA Cup final, after which he was sold to Chelsea, for which he proved to be one of the key players in the late ‘90s. During his tenure with this team, he became the first player in the 20th century to win the FA Cup trophy four times.

In his later career, Hughes played for Southampton, Everton and Blackburn Rovers before officially retiring. However, his managerial career started in 1999 when he was appointed head coach of the Wales national team, and after five years with Mark in charge, the team came close to qualifying for UEFA Euro 2004 and ended second in their group. After leaving the Welsh national side, he took charge of Blackburn in the FA Premier League, and succeeded in taking it to an FA Cup semi-final for the first time in more than 40 years. His managerial abilities developed through the years, and he was awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month award in October 2007. In July 2010 he became the new manager of Fulham and eventually led the team to UEFA Europa League qualification. However, after less than a year managing Fulham, Hughes signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Queens Park Rangers, rejuvenating the team with several high-profile signings with the intent of establishing it as a Premier League club. Since May 2013, he has been managing Stoke City.

Privately, Hughes has been known throughout his career as “Sparky” after a character from the comic of the same name. He is married to Jill, and they have three children.
