According to some users on Facebook, her lawyer, Olexander Scherba, reports not knowing her whereabouts. Such news began to surface online a day after she showed up protesting against Russia in the First Channel’s Time program.
On 14 March 2022, Maria, the channel’s editor, broke into the live broadcast set and shouted the words, “Stop the war. No to war.” with a sign that urged people not to believe the propaganda.
Although the news anchor continued her report with a louder voice, Maria’s protests were clear to the listeners for a few seconds before the broadcast switched to a recorded segment.

After her stint in live television, the law enforcement detained her. She spent the whole night in the police department of the All-Russian Exhibition Center, Ostankino.
Mediazona, on 15 March, reported that the Ostankino District Court of Moscow charged her a 30-thousand-ruble fine ($280.37). Reportedly, the judge found her guilty under Part 2 of Article 20.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses.
