Landen was off the third-floor balcony at the Mall of America by Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda. He was rushed by an ambulance to Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. He suffered “life-threatening injuries” according to the GoFundMe established on his behalf,and is fighting for his life.

Aranda, the man that pushed him, was arrested immediately after as he was trying to flee to the mall’s transit station. He is believed have a history of mental health problems and had been ordered to stay away from the mall twice. He had previously told police that “he has some anger issues” after being arrested for smashing computers at a Minneapolis public library.
According to police’s report after investigations, Aranda went to the mall specifically “looking for someone to kill”. He originally “planned to kill an adult because they usually stand near the balcony” but instead set his sights on Landen Hoffman.
He repeatedly stated in his interview that he had the plan and intention to kill someone at the mall that day and that he was aware that what he was doing was wrong”. Aranda He is currently is facing charges of attempted premeditated first-degree murder for the crime.

On 13th April 2019, a GoFundMe account was created by a family friend to help fund medical expenses. The aim of the fund was is to raise $1 million and by 17th April the public had raised over 800,000.
Landen is described on the page, as the sweetest kindest 5 years old you will ever meet. They further state that his soul is soft and gentle and instantly brings a smile to everybody he meets. They also say that he is full of energy and life and enjoys soccer, playing with friends and family and playing hockey with his brother and sister.”
It also stated that Landen had “a very long road to recovery ahead of him, as he suffered life-threatening injuries, many people who fall from that distance aren’t as lucky to make it. He has many surgeries ahead in his life to try to get back to a normal life for a young, vibrant boy.
Landen Hoffman Update
According to his family, Landen is making baby steps towards recovering. While giving an update on his progress to their supporters on GoFundMe website on Wednesday the 17th of April 2019, they stated;
‘The power of prayer is simply amazing. We all have been extremely humbled by the outpouring of support and prayers from everyone one,’ the statement said.
‘Thank you for showing us there is so much good not only in our community but across the globe. Condition is again similar to previous days, another peaceful night of sleep – small steps towards the healing process. Each new day is a good day.
‘Landen’s recovery is expected to be ongoing for a long time, while it’s hard to estimate costs, this will change everything for their family and require much of their time and focus.’
