The Philadelphia 76ers selected Van Horn as the second pick overall in the 1997 NBA Draft, but immediately traded him to the New Jersey Nets with Lucious Harris, Michael Cage and Don MacLean in exchange for Tim Thomas, Anthony Parker, Jim Jackson and Eric Montross. His rookie season was excellent; Keith led the Nets in points, 19.7 and 6.5 rebounds per game average, and helped New Jersey to enter the playoffs after a four-year absence.
