Katrina Cooke Brownlee, a Brooklyn native, was shot by her fiance ten times over the span of an hour and a half. Her fiance, Alex Irvin of New York, shot her five times, reloaded his gun again, and shot her five more times.
Katrina was bleeding on the bathroom floor when a family friend of Alex’s stopped by and rushed her to the hospital.
Despite her situation, Katrina chose to work for the New York City Police Department. Katrina enrolled in the Police Academy in July 2001.
Katrina worked for the NYPD in a multitude of different roles. She joined the narcotics unit in December 2003 and began working as an undercover agent.
Katrina joined the NYPD’s Vice Squad and worked as a prostitute to catch drug dealers.
In July 2017, Katrina was promoted to detective first grade, the highest investigative level in the NYPD.

In July 2021, Katrina Cooke Brownlee retired from the New York City Police Department after serving the department for more than two decades.
Katrina claimed that her doctors warned her she would not be able to walk again after the shooting, but she proved them wrong.
She slowly improved from a wheelchair to a walker, then a cane, and finally walked on her own.
Brownlee is the founder of “Young Ladies of Our Future,” a non-profit organization. Her mission is to motivate, educate, empower, and mentor young women.

Katrina met Alex Irvin, a Rikers Island prison officer when she was 18, and the two started dating and had a kid together. Though they were not married, the pair were living together.
Katrina was already a single mother of one child before she met him.
She had thought that Alex would take care of her and her daughter. This, however, did not happen.
For many years, Alex punished, abused, and even raped her.
She claims she contacted the cops several times, but each time they arrived at their home, they would see Irvin’s badge and would depart without providing the assistance she required.
