Jonathan Lee Whitlatch, a 33-year-old Boone resident, fatally shot his ex-girlfriend Eden Mariah Montag and her friend Vivien Renee Flores outside Cornerstone Church of Armes, outside Des Moines.
The deadly shooting of two women outside an Ames church on Thursday, May 2, 2022, was a targeted event, according to Story County investigators, and the gunman, Jonathan Lee Whitlatch, took his own life after shooting them.
The incident occurred at Cornerstone Church in Ames shortly before 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
The church was conducting a Salt Company meeting when shots were fired outside the church.

Whitlatch was charged with third-degree harassment and impersonating a public authority in Ames on May 31.
The FBI is aiding local authorities in their investigation into the event, which is still ongoing. Investigators are attempting to determine whether the shooter’s pistol was lawfully obtained.
Officials requested well-wishes and prayers for the victims’ families, as well as respect for their privacy.

Ames Church Shooting Video Of Ex-Girlfriend Eden Mariah Montag
Jonathan Lee Whitlatch fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and her friend, then shot himself outside an Ames church.
The church is about 30 miles north of Des Moines, near Interstate 35. Whitlatch and Montang had recently broken up, according to Story County Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald.
Montang, Flores, and another buddy were walking into the church from the parking lot when Whitlatch pulled up alongside them, armed with a 9mm handgun.
Whitlatch allegedly opened fire, instantly killing Montang and Flores.
The incident occurred on the same night that President Joe Biden delivered a speech to the nation about the need for stricter gun laws.
According to Story County authorities, officers and others were at the shooting scene within minutes of the rounds being fired.

Jonathan Lee Whitlatch Shot Dead After Shooting His Ex-Girlfriend
Jonathan Lee Whitlatch shot himself in the parking lot of Cornerstone Church of Armes after shooting Eden Mariah Montang, 22, and Vivian Renee Flores, 21.
Following an argument with Montang, he shot them with a 9mm pistol. Whitlatch had recently broken up with Montang, and he had been harassing his ex-girlfriend.
He was charged with domestic violence and impersonating a public authority.
He had been released on bail and was scheduled to appear in court on June 10th.
Following the incident, authorities investigated Whitlatch’s home and discovered 9MM handgun ammo as well as an AR-15 unrelated to the shooting.
