In the statement, Toronto Mayor John Tory apologized to his wife and children, whom he believed to have let down more than anyone else.
He also apologized to the people of Toronto, calling the relationship “a serious error in judgment.”
Deputy mayor Jennifer McKelvie is expected to be taking the role of mayor after Tory’s resignation.
Tory also said he would work with the deputy mayor and city employees to ensure an orderly transition to a new administration.
He added that he deeply regretted stepping down from the job he loved in such a manner.
