At a young age, Raymond Briggs lost both his parents and his wife, Jean Briggs. Briggs threw himself into his job as a result of the anguish.
A breakthrough occurred with the publication of The Mother Goose Treasury for which he won his first Kate Greenaway Medal. He received a second gift from Father Christmas, which propelled him to prominence.
Raymond Briggs’s Wife, Jean Briggs
Raymond Briggs was married to his wife, Jean Briggs until she died in 1973. Briggs wed the painter Jean Taprell Clark in 1963.
Briggs’s schizophrenic wife Jean passed away from leukemia in 1973, two years after his parents passed away. The couple opted not to have children because of her mental instability, leaving him all by himself after she passed away.
The time was very difficult for the author as he had no one, neither father, mother, wife, or children.
“At that point, I thought of killing myself. Well, just in theory. I didn’t take any significant action. I just pondered, “Well, what’s the point?” You don’t have a mother, father, or wife. Everything is gone, let’s leave,” he spoke with The Telegraph.
Raymond never got married again, but he did meet his next companion, Liz, in a neighborhood bar. They dated for 42 years, but they never moved in together. She passed away from Parkinson’s disease in 2015.
As Liz’s “sad and dreadful” state worsened, Raymond desperately tried to save her by compiling files of information about the illness and taking on the role of her caregiver.
He stated in 2017: “Two ladies, both my wife, dead. I’m reeling from the pain of losing yet another partner under really horrific circumstances.”
“For the love of God, one died of schizophrenia and leukemia, while the other of Parkinson’s.”
“What a life. On we go. For a bit If I’m lucky, and if you can even call it lucky, I may only have seven years to live. I can tell that I’m almost done.”
Although he despised the moniker “King of Christmas,” it was understandable that the holiday season caused him more pain than pleasure.
“It is usually described as a family moment by everyone. That’s okay if you have a family, but a lot of people don’t, “Raymond told the Guardian.
“If you’re my age, the generation in front of you has already passed away, and if you’re an only child like I was, you don’t have any siblings. If you haven’t had any of your own, there isn’t anyone. No soul,” he explained in pain.
