According to officials, Papini has been accused of lying about her kidnapping to hang out with an ex-boyfriend.
He had formerly resided in Costa Mesa, California. He picked up the mother of two in a rental car on the day she vanished after exchanging romantic texts with her for weeks.
He claimed the two spent three weeks hiding in his Costa Mesa apartment, where he assisted her in fabricating her injuries, including a brand on her shoulder, when she came home.
When her twisted plot ended, Reyes confessed to dropping Papini off by the side of the road in Woodland.
He confessed to his role in the hoax when questioned based on male DNA found on Papini’s underwear.
Reyes, an employee at an athletic store, told police that he felt Papini was in a violent relationship and went to her hometown of Redding to pick her up after she requested assistance to flee.

According to the accusation, Reyes stated that Papini was a “good friend” to whom she had sought assistance. She told him that her spouse was abusing her and attempting to flee.
He isn’t sure if that was the catalyst for her contacting him. She called him at work and told him she was planning on fleeing to him and that she had been saving money and wanted to send him some money so she could have money while she was with him.
Reyes informed authorities that she inflicted self-inflicted injuries on herself while staying with him, including bruising herself and burning her arms.
He also admitted to assisting her in the infliction of some injuries, even though he claims he never touched her physically. She told him, for example, to shoot her in the leg with a pellet pistol.
He stated that he did not assist Papini in burning her arm. ‘It was a self-inflicted wound.’ On her arm, I didn’t burn anything.’
Reyes even went so far as to remark that Papini harming herself perplexed him, telling police, ‘There aren’t too many people that come up and say hurt me.’ He never gets physical with ladies.
