According to a new report, the person in police custody has been identified as Gerald Brevard III. According to the Daily Beast, Brevard was named as the suspect by senior law enforcement officials.

According to the report, Brevard is also identified as a D.C. resident with a criminal history that includes being accused of assaulting a woman in Virginia in 2020.

Other details were scarce Tuesday morning, and officials were unable to confirm the suspect’s identity.

The location of the suspect’s arrest was unknown, but the D.C. police department’s homicide division tweeted at 5:40 a.m. that the suspect was being interviewed. The police department thanked “the community for all your tips,” implying that the suspect was apprehended with the public’s help.

On Monday, officials released photographs of the suspect, who appeared to be a Black or brown man.

Of course, the irony is that statistics show that serial killers have disproportionately been white men throughout history. In contrast, the homeless population in the United States is disproportionately Black.

All five homeless people who were shot over the course of 12 days have kept their identities, and ethnic backgrounds are hidden. There’s also no evidence that the suspect targeted the homeless people because of their ethnicity.
