G. Gnanalingam, the founder and chairman of Westports Holdings, has passed away at the age of 78. The news of his demise was announced by the company in a filing with Malaysia’s stock exchange, expressing their deep sadness and paying tribute to his contributions.
Gnanalingam, known as Tan Sri Datuk Gnanalingam, co-founded Westports Holdings in 1994 alongside Ahmayuddin bin Ahmad, securing the concession to operate the port. He served as the executive chairman of Westports Holdings since 2013 and held the same position at its subsidiary, Westports Malaysia, since 2000. His son, Ruben Emir, is the group managing director of Westports Holdings.
Under Gnanalingam’s visionary leadership, Westports Holdings flourished, transforming Port Klang into a premier gateway port in Malaysia and a significant transshipment hub in Southeast Asia. The company has achieved a market share of 80% for container traffic on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia at Port Klang. Located strategically in the Strait of Malacca, Westports Malaysia boasts connectivity with 350 ports worldwide.
Westports Malaysia provides a wide range of port services, including marine services, rental services, and other ancillary services. With a 60-year concession to operate and expand its container terminals in Pulau Indah, Port Klang, it has become a vital player in the region’s logistics and trade industry. In the previous year, the company recorded revenues of 2.1 billion ringgit ($445 million), showcasing its steady growth.
Before his successful entrepreneurial journey, Gnanalingam began his career as a sales representative for the British American Tobacco group in 1968. He later ventured into marketing consultancy, establishing G-Team Consultants in 1988. His extensive experience in the field propelled him to great heights, leading to the founding of Westports Holdings.
Gnanalingam’s vision, stewardship, and dedication have left an indelible mark on the company and the port industry as a whole. His passing is a great loss, not only for Westports Holdings but also for the Malaysian business community. He will be remembered for his compassion, generosity, and kindness, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
Gnanalingam is survived by his wife, Siew Yong, and his children, Ruben Emir, Shaline, and Surin. As the company mourns the loss of their founder, the thoughts and condolences of the business world are with his family during this difficult time.
