A Melbourne financial planner has been barred from practicing in his field after unlawfully entering Perth to witness the AFL Grand Final amid Western Australia’s stringent COVID-19 border restrictions.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has banned Mark Babbage from providing financial services or engaging in credit operations for a period of ten years as a result of his criminal conviction for his attempts to attend the grand final.
After pleading guilty to charges of gaining by deception and three counts of breaking COVID regulations in WA’s Magistrates Court in October, the Demons fan was also barred from performing any duty linked to the supply of credit services.
Babbage and his trip companion, Hayden Burbank, the proprietor of Melbourne pub and restaurant Morris Jones, were both sentenced to three months in prison in Western Australia for the offenses.
The two flew from Melbourne to Darwin, where they forged automobile, rental, and bank documents in order to gain entry to Perth as tourists in time for the AFL Grand Final.
