Ethan Crumbley Case Explored
According to a new report, accused Michigan high-school shooter Ethan Crumbley was assigned a court-appointed lawyer. Still, his parents hired their own expensive private legal team to fight the lesser charges brought against them.
According to The Independent, James and Jennifer Crumbley, who were accused as accessories in their 15-year-old son’s first-degree murder case, have hired a team that includes Shannon Smith, who formerly represented disgraced USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.
On the other hand, their son is being represented by Paulette Michel Loftin, a little-known defence attorney from the Detroit suburb of Rochester, who the court selected.
If he gets convicted of four counts of first-degree murder, terrorism, and seven counts of assault with intent to murder in the Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School that killed four people, Ethan Crumbley faces life imprisonment.
His parents were apprehended last weekend after escaping from allegations of manslaughter.
While their decision to employ expensive lawyers may appear cruel, leaving their son to fend for himself, one notable lawyer believes there is a reason.
The parents, in some ways, have a worse case than the child, according to senior defence attorney Bill Swor, who spoke to the Detroit Free Press.
After a meeting with authorities over a “disturbing” artwork the youngster created, the Crumbleys purchased the 9-millimetre semiautomatic weapon their son reportedly used in the shootings and refused to remove him from school.
Authorities say he returned to class three hours later and opened fire.
Ethan’s attorney, Loftin, told the Free Press that she would not comment on the case until she had seen all of the evidence against her client.
According to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, school administrators and a Detroit artist who may have assisted the Crumbleys in eluding police could potentially face charges.
