Bubba Watson is a professional golfer known for being one of the few left-handed golfers on tour. The American, named Bubba by his father after former pro football player Bubba Smith, is one of the PGA Tour’s leading players and also a multi-major champion.
biography
Bubba Watson was born Gerry Lester Watson Jr. to Gerry Sr. and Molly Marie Watson on November 5, 1978 in Baghdad, Florida. He is one of two children of his parents. He has a sister named Melinda Watson Conner.
Watson became interested in golf at the age of six after his father introduced him to the sport after a trip to the golf course. He soon became obsessed with the sport, preferring to practice daily in the family backyard rather than playing with toys.
He then attended Milton High School in Milton, Florida where he began playing amateur golf and catching the eyes of enthusiasts. He then attended Faulkner State Community College, where he continued to impress, earning a spot in the first-team Junior College All-American. He then transferred to the University of Georgia, which was the NCAA golf champion at the time. In his freshman year as a junior, he helped them win the 2000 Southeastern Conference title.
After his senior year, Bubba Watson turned professional by competing on the Nationwide Tour. His early years were not memorable as he struggled to display the skill and form that made him a sensation in college. Watson finally found form in 2004 with two second places. This continued throughout the decade as he rose up the PGA Tour rankings, though a tournament title proved elusive.
Bubba Watson had more success in 2011 than winning two more championships; the Farmers Insurance Open and the Zurich Classic. He started 2012 with three top five finishes in seven competitions before beating South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen in a sudden death playoff to wear the distinctive green jacket and win the Masters Tournament, his first major championship . The win also propelled him to a career-high fourth place in the golf rankings.
In 2014, Watson prevailed against strong competition from young golfer Jordan Spieth to win his second major championship at Augusta National Golf Club.
Family – Who is Bubba Watson’s wife, Angie Watson?
Bubba Watson is married to Canadian former basketball player Angela “Angie” Watson (née Ball), who was born on June 11, 1977 in Toronto, Canada.
The couple met at the University of Georgia, where Bubba played on the school’s golf team while Angie was on the women’s basketball team. They exchanged vows in 2004.
Watson revealed this on his first date with his wife-to-be, she told him she couldn’t have children, to which he replied that there’s nothing like giving a child a home, which means they can adopt. The couple continued their relationship while still pursuing their individual dream of being professional athletes. This meant their relationship was long-distance at times, as while Bubba played on the PGA Tour, she played basketball professionally in Italy and France.
Angie, who is 6ft 3in, eventually returned to the United States to play for Charlotte Sting in the Women’s National Basketball Association. Injuries that season prevented her from gaining a foothold in the league and led to her retirement from the game. She continued to help run her husband’s businesses.
Due to family and health reasons, it took the couple almost a decade to adopt a child. In 2012, the couple adopted their first child, a son named Caleb. Two years later, they adopted another child, this time a girl named Dakota.
