Reid was born on March 19, 1958, in Los Angeles. As a teenager, he worked as a vendor at Dodger Stadium and attended John Marshall High School. He also participated in youth sports at the Lemon Grove Recreation Center in East Hollywood, where Pete Arbogast was one of his coaches. Arbogast is the radio play-by-play announcer for the USC football team and previously worked for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Reid was 13 years old when he competed in the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition on Monday Night Football in 1971; he was already so big that he wore Les Josephson’s jersey (6’1″, 207 pounds).
Reid was an offensive tackle at Glendale Community College in Glendale, California, and had intended to transfer to Stanford when he injured his knee. BYU head coach LaVell Edwards desired Reid’s teammate and best friend Randy Tidwell and recruited him to the team to help Tidwell decide to attend BYU.
Reid played with Jim McMahon and Tom Holmoe at BYU. Reid, according to teammates, did not play frequently but was very analytical, closely studying Edwards and offensive coordinator Doug Scovil. In his senior year, BYU won the Holiday Bowl.
