Due to an unstable childhood, Carradine fell into substance abuse and frequent arrests. He attended Oakland High School, Oakland Junior College, and studied music and drama at San Francisco State College. He dropped out of college and was eventually drafted to the United States Army. While stationed in Virginia, he managed to help found a theater company, often recognized as the “entertainment unit.” Carradine was honorably discharged after two years and the birth of his first daughter, Calista. He starred in the series Kung Fu from 1972 to 1975 for which he was nominated for both an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award. In 1976 he won the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor for his role as Woody Guthrie in Bound for Glory. He died on June 3, 2009 at the Nai Lert Park Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. He was found hanging in a closet by a rope. The death was not concluded as a suicide but as accidental erotic asphyxiation.
