Who Is Allegra Spender?
Allegra Spender, the daughter of Australian fashion designer Carla Zampatti, will run against incumbent Liberal MP Dave Sharma for the Wentworth seat in the federal election.
Spender, whose father John was a member of the Liberal Party in the federal seat of North Sydney from 1980 to 1990, said the party’s failure of action on climate change had led her to forge her own route.
Her grandfather was also a federal MP, representing Sydney’s Warringah district, and her choice to run as an independent shatters two generations of Liberal Party devotion.
Thank you all for your kind messages of support. It was really after watching COP26 and realising that Scott Morrison and the team were never going to get there that I decided to put my hand up. The next 10 years are crucial for both climate and economy. https://t.co/eBTRq4MHmO

Through a Tweet, she expresses her thanks to all who have helped her.
“I can’t stand by while our children’s futures, employment, and prosperity are jeopardized by a government that is out of touch with climate change, out of touch with the new economy, and out of touch with the rest of the world,” Spender said.
Before becoming managing director of Zampatti’s fashion line, Spender studied at Cambridge University and Harvard Business School.
She has since served as head of the Sydney Renewable Power Company and as CEO of the Australian Business and Community Network, an educational disadvantage organization.
Sharma won the constituency back from another high-profile independent, Kerryn Phelps, by a close margin of 1.3 percent in the 2019 election.
